Z ziemi chilijskiej do polskiej i po zwycięstwo na Tajwanie / From Chile to Poland and for the victory in Taiwan

Chilijską reprezentację na zawody tworzy dwóch rekonstruktorów Jednostki Wojskowej GROM. To Juan Carlos Saffie – „Kserkses”, i Cristian Fuentes Amestica – „Khan”. Nie są związani ze służbami mundurowymi Chile. Pierwszy z nich pracuje jako konsultant biznesowy, zaś drugi jest administratorem baz danych w Universidad San Sebastian. Na rękawach ich mundurów znajdą się charakterystyczne naszywki Fundacji SPRZYMIERZENI z GROM. Ten drobny fakt zmienia zupełnie znaczenie ich startu – nie chodzi jedynie o zabawę, rywalizację z międzynarodowymi pasjonatami airsoftu i zwycięstwo, ale propagowanie historii, wartości i tradycji Jednostki Wojskowej GROM, które trwają także poza jej strukturami – w ramach organizacji non-profit, wspierającej weteranów – nie tylko GROM-u czy Wojsk Specjalnych, ale żołnierzy i funkcjonariuszy wymagających pomocy.

The Chilean team for the competition includes two reenactors of the Military Unit GROM. These are: Juan Carlos Saffie, “Kserkses”, and Cristian Fuentes Amestica, “Khan”. They have no ties with the uniformed services in Chile. The former works as a business consultant, the latter is a database administrator at the University of San Sebastian. On their shoulders they will wear the characteristic emblem of the ALLIED with GROM Foundation. This simple fact changes the meaning of their team entirely: it is not only about fun, international rivalry with the airsoft enthusiasts and victory, but also about promoting the history, values and tradition of the Military Unit GROM that are present outside of its structures – in the non-profit organization that supports the veterans – not only those of GROM or the Polish SOF in general, but soldiers and law-enforcement officers that need help.

W zawodach na Tajwanie wystartuje 20 zespołów z 25 krajów, w tym reprezentacja Polski – Łukasz Mućwicki i Łukasz Pasiut. Trzymamy kciuki zarówno za polskich i chilijskich chłopaków!

20 teams from 25 countries will take part in the competition in Taiwan, amongst them one team from Poland: Łukasz Mućwicki and Łukasz Pasiut. We keep our fingers crossed for both the Chilean and Polish teams!

Kserkses odwiedził Polskę w kwietniu ubiegłego roku – spędził tu miesiąc, podróżując po naszym kraju. Był to w pełni zaplanowany i zorganizowany wyjazd, podczas którego Kserksesa przyjęli członkowie oddziałów Specjalnych Grup Operacyjnych (SGO) oraz firma Gunfire. Kserkses wpadł również do redakcji SPECIAL OPS, gdzie porozmawialiśmy o początkach rekonstrukcji, o jego wrażeniach z wizyty, środowisku airsoftowo-rekonstrukcyjnym i relacjach ze służbami mundurowymi w Chile.

Kserkses spent a month touring Poland in April last year. It was a fully planned and organized trip, where Kserkses was received  by the members of several  Special Operations Groups (SpecjalneGrupyOperacyjne – SGO) as well as the Gunfire company. Kserkses also visited the SPECIAL OPS HQ, where we talked about the beginnings of their reenactment, his impressions on the visit, the airsoft-reenacment community and relations with the uniformed services in Chile.

Jak opowiadał, początkowo GROM był dla niego i jego kolegów z grupy tylko jedną z jednostek specjalnych na świecie, ale w miarę poznawania jego historii i korzeni, tradycji oraz sylwetek żołnierzy, także tych, którzy napełnili jednostkę wartościami – Cichociemnych Spadochroniarzy Armii Krajowej, hobby stało się pasją, a zabawa – poważnym przedsięwzięciem. Jednak nikt wówczas, w tym Kserkses, nie podejrzewał, że będzie miał szansę przyjechać do Polski, zwiedzić kraj, poznać namacalnie jego historię, nie mówiąc już o spotkaniu z prawdziwymi żołnierzami JW 2305.

He told us that at first for him and his friends, GROM was just another unit of the special operations forces of the world, but as they learnt about its history and roots, traditions and soldiers’ profiles (also those who filled the unit with values – the Dark and Silent Paratroopers of the Home Army – Cichociemni Spadochroniarze Armii Krajowej), their hobby became passion, and the fun transformed into a real-deal-type of project. However, at that time, no one, including Kserkses, imagined that a visit in Poland would be possible – with the sightseeing, learning tangibly its history, not to mention the meeting of the true soldiers of the JW 2305. 

Przyznał, że w Polsce zaskoczyła go silna więź między cywilami i Wojskiem Polskim, szacunek dla munduru i relacje. Podał przykład wspomnianej już formacji SGO – cywili-pasjonatów. Była to dla niego nowość, gdyż w Chile taka więź nie istnieje, co wynika z uwarunkowań historycznych, a więc i społecznych. To utrudnia profesjonalne szkolenie się pod okiem żołnierzy i funkcjonariuszy – nawet tych byłych, więc chłopaki – chcąc przygotować się do profesjonalnego odtwarzania jakichkolwiek żołnierzy, musieli posiłkować się materiałami ze szkoleń wyszperanymi w Internecie, na forach, blogach, YouTubie. Dodatkowo, utrudnieniem był fakt, iż społeczność airsoftowa, a szczególnie rekonstrukcyjna w Chile jest niewielka. Dla większości ludzi to jednak nadal tylko zabawa, bieganie z „zabawką po lesie”. Kserkses wspomina, że jego znajomi spoza grupy nie do końca rozumieli pasję jego i jego przyjaciół-rekonstruktorów. Dziwił ich też wybór jednostki.

He admitted that he was surprised by the strong bonds between the civilian part of the society and the military – the Polish Armed Forces, by the respect for the uniform and relations. He gave an example of the abovementioned SGO formations – civilians with military passion. It was something new to him since in Chile such a bond does not exist which results from the history and is reflected in social aspects. The makes the professional trainings conducted by soldiers and law enforcement officers (even the former ones) difficult, so the guys – to get ready for the professional reenactment of any military unit - had to seek help on the Internet, on blogs, YouTube etc. Additionally, the airsoft community in Chile, and particularly the reenactment one, is rather small. For the majority of people it is still just fun and games – running around in the forest with a toy-gun. Kserkses’ friends from outside the group did not really understand the passion of his and his fellow reenactors. They were surprised with the choice of the unit too.

Oczywiście, w Chile są obecne inne grupy rekonstrukcyjne – skupiają się one jednak na II wojnie światowej (odtwarzaniu sylwetek żołnierzy niemieckich, radzieckich, amerykańskich i brytyjskich), zaś w kwestii współczesnych formacji – są to głównie grupy odtwarzające U.S. Navy SEALs, choć istnieje także grupa specjalizująca się w niemieckiej KSK i rosyjskiej Alfie. Odtwarzanie jakichkolwiek chilijskich jednostek byłoby niemożliwe z uwagi na fakt, iż posługiwanie się emblematami lokalnych służb jest zabronione dla cywili.

Of course, there are other reenactors in Chile, but they focus mostly on the Second World War (reenacting the profiles of German, Soviet, American and British troops), and in the case of modern warfare – it is mainly about the U.S.Navy SEALs, although there are also groups specializing in the German KSK and the Russian Alpha. Reenacting Chilean units would be impossible because of that fact that civilians cannot wear the emblems used by the local police or military forces.

Nasz gość opowiadał, że w rekonstrukcji sylwetek żołnierzy Jednostki Wojskowej GROM najtrudniejsze było zebranie informacji na temat uzbrojenia i wyposażenia, a następnie - gdy już zebrane informacje zweryfikowali, znalezienie tego sprzętu było niemal niemożliwe (nie wspominając już nawet o problemach ze ściągnięcie go do Chile). Z czasem, gdy o ich istnieniu dowiedzieli się Polacy, stało się to prostsze, choć – oczywiście, 95% sprzętu to zakupy zagraniczne. Udało im się jednak osiągnąć taki poziom, że ich zdjęcia z ćwiczeń są czasem mylone ze zdjęciami prawdziwych GROM-owców.

Our guest told us that in the reenacting of the GROM soldier the most difficult thing was to acquire the data about the weapons and equipment, and when they finally managed to verify all the info, finding all that gear was nearly impossible (without event mention the complications that shipping it to Chile entails). After some time, when the Poles learnt about them, that became easier, but still – of course, 95% of the gear was shipped from abroad. However, they managed to get on the level where their pictures from exercises are sometimes mistaken for the photos of the true GROM soldiers.

Od byłych żołnierzy formacji otrzymali zresztą „błogosławieństwo” do dalszego działania, pełną aprobatę i pochwałę działalności, wraz z garścią wskazówek, co mogą poprawić, a czego powinni unikać. Początkowo kupowali chińskie kopie, z czasem – już te oryginalne, coraz bardziej profesjonalne. Co ciekawe, w pewnym momencie zorientowali się, że czasami prawdziwe (oryginalne) kamizelki z Polski w ostatecznym rozrachunku okazywały się tańsze od ich replik ze znaczkiem „made in PRC”. Nie raz okazywało się, że wyłożony budżet przepadał, bo popełniali błędy w zakupie wyposażenia, nie mając wystarczających informacji. Kserkses przyznaje jednak, że to nic, bo taka jest niekiedy cena wiedzy i profesjonalizmu, a więc popełnianie błędów było prostu częścią pewnego procesu.

From the former GROM operators they received full approval to continue their project, together with a handful of tips on what they could improve and what they should avoid. At first, they were buying Chinese-made copies and, after some time, the original stuff, so it was becoming more and more professional. Interestingly enough, they discovered that sometimes the real Polish plate carriers where actually cheaper and their Chinese replicas! Sometimes it turned out that the money they spent went down the drain, because  as they lacked enough information, they made mistakes during the purchases. Kserkses admits though that this did not discourage them since this was the price of knowledge and getting professional, making mistakes was just a part of progress.

Poznając każdego dnia wartości i tradycje Cichociemnych, a więc historię GROM-u, Kserkses i jego towarzysze czuli prawdziwą dumę mogąc odtwarzać żołnierzy JW 2305 – symbole nosili z troską i szacunkiem. Jak wyraźnie zaznaczył Kserkses, ich działanie to hołd oddany GROM-owi. Chilijscy rekonstruktorzy nie chcą podrabiać ani podpinać się pod GROM-owców. Przy emblematach jednostki można znaleźć naszywkę „Rekonstruktor”. Kserkses nosi, zresztą, naszywki-kopie wykonane w Chile (i poprawione po uwagach weteranów) – tych, które otrzymał w prezencie podczas wizyty byłych żołnierzy JW 2305 w Chile, nie zakłada z uwagi na szacunek. Rekonstrukcja JW 2305 stanowiła także okazję do zdobycia wiedzy o innych jednostkach specjalnych w Polsce.

While learning more and more about the values and traditions of the Dark and Silent and the history of GROM, Kserkses and his friends began to feel the real pride of JW 2305 reenacting – they wore the emblems with care and respect. As Kserkses underlined it, their work is a homage paid to GROM. Chilean reenactors did not and do not want to copy GROM without any reflection or just to get the fame. Next to the emblems of the unit you can see a badge with the title “Reenactor”. Kserkses wears the badges made in Chile (and corrected according to the veterans’ remarks) – the ones that he received as a gift from a former JW 2305 operator he does not wear out of respect. Reenactment of the JW 2305 was also a chance to learn more about the rest of the SOF units in Poland.

Kserkses wspomina, jak ważna była dla niego akceptacja Polaków jako ogółu, którzy odwiedzali fanpage grupy, śledzili jej działania. Pamiętne zdjęcie z flagą, szeroko udostępniane na polskich profilach o militarnym charakterze (w tym na profilu SPECIAL OPS) zdobyło tysiące polubień, co zdecydowanie dodało skrzydeł grupie, której członkowie zobaczyli, że ich pasja ma sens znacznie głębszy niż myśleli – ich idea miała nie tylko lokalny zasięg. Była to również motywacja do jeszcze większej dbałości o szczegóły, choć zaangażowanie obserwujących ich fanów polegało także na życzliwych wskazówkach dotyczących umundurowania, wyposażenia czy uzbrojenia.

Kserkses underlines the acceptance their group received from the Poles as a whole – people who visited the group’s fanpage and followed their project. The memorable photograph with the Polish flag, widely shared on military profiles (including SPECIAL OPS) received thousands of likes, which definitely made the group spread their wings. The members saw that their passion had a meaning deeper than they had thought – their idea was not only of the local character anymore. It was also a motivation to care even more about the details, and the engagement of the FB followers included kind suggestions and tips concerning the uniforms, equipment or weapons. 

Chilijczycy utworzyli zamkniętą grupę dyskusyjna na FB w celu wymiany informacji z rekonstruktorami GROM-u w innych krajach – na Litwie, we Włoszech, w Stanach czy w Hiszpanii. Chętnie dzielą się swoją wiedzą, by pomóc kolegom z drugiego końca świata. Taka jest, bowiem, idea rekonstrukcji – by uświadamiać, szerzyć informacje na temat historii.

The Chileans started a private discussion group on Facebook to share information with reenactors of GROM in other countries – Lithuania, Italy, United States or Spain. They eagerly share their knowledge to help their friends from the other side of the globe. This is, in fact, the idea of reenactment – to make people aware, to spread information about history.

Plan podróży Kserskesa był napięty i wypełniony po brzegi – dzięki temu miał on okazję zwiedzić obiekty będące „kamieniami milowymi” w historii narodu, kultury czy wojskowości – muzea, cmentarze, pomniki, forty i bunkry. Najbardziej wstrząsający był dla niego Oświęcim (czytał o nim, widział zdjęcia, ale przebywanie na terenie byłego obozu było przytłaczające – stanowiło boleśnie namacalną lekcją historii, z której powinny być wyciągane wnioski), a także Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego. Zainteresowało go również Gniezno – historia początków naszego kraju była dla niego fascynująca jako cudzoziemca. Podróż sprawiła, że w jeszcze większym stopniu ma obecnie świadomość polskiego dziedzictwa, jak i dziedzictwa Cichociemnych i GROM-u – tym bardziej cieszy się, że mógł zobaczyć ich ojczyznę.

Kserkses’ schedule of the trip was totally planned. Thanks to that, he had an opportunity to see the “milestones” in the history of the nation, its culture and the military’s – museums, cemeteries, monuments, forts and bunkers. The most shocking for him was Auschwitz (he had read about the place, but being there was truly overpowering – it was a tangibly painful history lesson from which real conclusions should be drawn), as it was also the case in the Warsaw Uprising Museum. He got interested in Gniezno – the history of the beginnings of our country was fascinating for him as a foreigner. The trip made him even more aware of our heritage, as well as the heritage of the Dark and Silent and GROM – he was happy that he could finally see their homeland.

Marzeniem Kserksesa jest ponowne odwiedzenie naszego kraju – tym razem z pozostałymi rekonstruktorami. Skupia się obecnie na promocji Fundacji SPRZYMIERZENI z GROM, co jest formą odwdzięczenia się choć w niewielkim stopniu za to wszystko, co otrzymał od GROM-owców. Chce się dalej dzielić tradycją i wartościami Jednostki Wojskowej GROM ze swoimi rodakami – czuje, że on i jego koledzy są łącznikiem między Chile a Polską i tym bardziej czują się dumni mogąc nosić symbole GROM-u.

Kserkses dreams to visit our country once again – this time with his fellow reenactors. He is now focused on promoting the ALLIES of GROM Foundation as a way of giving back to the GROM community a small part of what he has received from the soldiers. He wants to share the tradition and values of the JW GROM with his natives – he feels that he and his friends are a link between Chile and Poland, and wearing the symbols of GROM make them really proud.
